Hi, I'm Alex, the owner of GALAXSAW Handyman Services. After working as a commercial carpenter on large-scale construction projects—including a new Nike facility in Beaverton—I discovered that I enjoy the personal side of construction: helping homeowners, landlords, and local businesses with smaller projects that need attention and quality workmanship.

Today, I provide reliable handyman services throughout the Portland metro area. I specialize in small residential and commercial projects that many larger contractors don't take on, including repairs and installations that can typically be completed in four hours or less. My experience includes electrical and plumbing fixture replacements, PEX-A and PEX-B plumbing work, door lock and hardware installation, door jamb repairs, and many other home maintenance and repair services.

I am proud to be part of the Home Depot Pro Services contractor network and have completed projects for local organizations, including Reynolds School District. I am licensed, bonded, and insured through the Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB #233510).

Whether you are a homeowner, landlord, or property manager, my goal is simple: provide dependable service, clear communication, and quality repairs you can trust.

Thank you for visiting GALAXSAW Handyman Services. I look forward to helping with your next project.

Electrical Fixture Replacement & Installation

Replacing an outdated light fixture, ceiling fan, switch, dimmer, or electrical outlet can be a relatively small project, but it is important that the replacement is compatible with the existing electrical installation and installed correctly.

GALAXSAW provides electrical fixture replacement and selected minor electrical fixture installation services for residential customers in Portland, Oregon and the surrounding metro area. The service is focused primarily on replacing existing fixtures and devices rather than major electrical installations, new circuits, or extensive rewiring.

Light Fixture & Ceiling Light Replacement

Replacing an old light fixture is one of the easiest ways to update the appearance of a room without remodeling the entire space.

GALAXSAW can replace many existing residential light fixtures and ceiling lights, including replacing an outdated fixture with a newer style that you have selected.

Before purchasing a new fixture, it is helpful to check its dimensions, weight, mounting requirements, and electrical specifications. Some modern fixtures can be considerably heavier or use a different mounting system than the fixture they are replacing.

If you already purchased the fixture, send us the model information and a photo of the existing fixture when requesting service. This can help identify potential installation issues before the appointment.

Ceiling Fan Replacement & Installation

Replacing a ceiling fan can improve both the appearance and comfort of a room. GALAXSAW can evaluate replacement of an existing ceiling fan with a new customer-purchased model when the existing electrical and mounting conditions are appropriate.

Ceiling fans can vary considerably in weight, mounting hardware, control systems, and electrical requirements. Some models include remote controls, wall controls, integrated lighting, or other electronic features.

If you are replacing an existing ceiling fan, provide the new fan's model information and photos of the existing installation whenever possible.

New electrical wiring, new circuits, or modifications beyond a straightforward replacement may require an appropriately licensed electrician.

Light Switch & Dimmer Replacement

An old switch or dimmer can be replaced with a newer model to update the appearance or provide different control options.

GALAXSAW can replace existing switches and dimmers with compatible replacement devices. If you are installing a dimmer, the compatibility of the dimmer with the lighting technology is important. LED fixtures and bulbs, for example, may require a dimmer specifically designed for LED loads.

Smart switches and other electronic controls may have additional requirements, including compatibility with the existing wiring and sometimes a neutral connection.

If you have a particular smart switch or dimmer in mind, provide the model information before scheduling when possible.

Electrical Outlet & Receptacle Replacement

Damaged, worn, discolored, or outdated electrical outlets can be replaced with appropriate replacement devices when the existing installation is suitable for a straightforward replacement.

Replacement options can include different styles and configurations depending on the existing electrical system and the purpose of the outlet.

If an outlet is loose, unusually warm, damaged, sparking, repeatedly tripping a breaker, or showing other signs of an electrical problem, it may be more than a simple fixture replacement. In those situations, the underlying electrical issue should be evaluated rather than simply replacing the visible device.

Bathroom Fan & Vent Fixture Replacement

Bathroom exhaust fans help remove moisture and odors from bathrooms, but replacement can involve both electrical and mechanical considerations.

GALAXSAW can evaluate certain replacement projects involving existing bathroom ventilation fixtures when the existing installation and replacement unit are appropriate for the service.

Installing a completely new bathroom exhaust system, creating new ductwork, changing the vent route, or making other significant alterations can require additional work and permitting. Oregon's Building Codes Division specifically lists installation or alteration of bath fans among mechanical work that can require a permit.

If you are replacing an existing bathroom fan, send us the model information for the replacement fan and photos of the existing installation so the project can be evaluated beforehand.

Minor Wiring Adjustments

Some fixture replacements require small adjustments to the existing wiring or connections in order for the replacement device to be installed properly.

GALAXSAW can evaluate minor wiring adjustments associated with appropriate fixture-replacement projects, but this service is not intended to replace major electrical troubleshooting, new circuit installation, extensive rewiring, panel work, or electrical remodeling.

If the project involves adding new wiring, relocating an electrical device, installing a new circuit, upgrading a panel, or substantially altering the existing electrical system, an appropriately licensed electrical contractor may be required.

Oregon's Building Codes Division states that contractors performing electrical work generally need the appropriate CCB and BCD electrical contractor licensing, and electrical permits may be required for certain installations and alterations.

Replacing an Existing Fixture vs. Installing Something New

There is an important difference between replacing an existing fixture and creating a completely new electrical installation.

For example:

Existing ceiling light → new ceiling light:
Often a straightforward replacement when the existing electrical box, wiring, and mounting conditions are appropriate.

Existing ceiling fan → new ceiling fan:
Can often be evaluated as a replacement project when the existing mounting and electrical installation are suitable.

Existing switch → new switch or dimmer:
Can often be handled as a replacement when the existing wiring is compatible.

Existing outlet → new outlet:
Can often be handled as a replacement when the existing electrical installation is suitable.

No light currently exists → new light and wiring:
This is a different type of electrical project and may require additional licensing, permitting, and electrical work.

If you are unsure which category your project falls into, send photos and a description of what you want to change.

Customer-Purchased Electrical Fixtures

If you have already purchased a light, ceiling fan, switch, dimmer, outlet, or other fixture, we can evaluate the product and existing installation before scheduling.

Whenever possible, provide:

  • Manufacturer and model number

  • Photos of the existing fixture

  • Photos of the surrounding area

  • Photos of the existing switch or outlet

  • Information about the new fixture

  • Manufacturer's installation instructions

This is especially useful for smart fixtures, ceiling fans with electronic controls, and other products with specific installation requirements.

What We Don't Typically Handle

GALAXSAW's electrical fixture service is focused on smaller fixture replacement and related minor work, not major electrical projects.

Projects that may require a specialized electrical contractor include:

  • New electrical circuits

  • Major rewiring

  • Electrical panel replacement or upgrades

  • Extensive troubleshooting

  • Significant relocation of outlets or switches

  • New electrical installations where no existing wiring is present

  • Major electrical alterations

  • Other work outside the scope of our fixture-replacement service

When a project falls outside our scope, it is better to identify that before scheduling rather than attempting to turn a small fixture-replacement appointment into a larger electrical project.
