Hi, I'm Alex, the owner of GALAXSAW Handyman Services. After working as a commercial carpenter on large-scale construction projects—including a new Nike facility in Beaverton—I discovered that I enjoy the personal side of construction: helping homeowners, landlords, and local businesses with smaller projects that need attention and quality workmanship.

Today, I provide reliable handyman services throughout the Portland metro area. I specialize in small residential and commercial projects that many larger contractors don't take on, including repairs and installations that can typically be completed in four hours or less. My experience includes electrical and plumbing fixture replacements, PEX-A and PEX-B plumbing work, door lock and hardware installation, door jamb repairs, and many other home maintenance and repair services.

Range Hood & Over-the-Range Microwave Installation

A new range hood or over-the-range microwave can make a noticeable difference in the functionality and appearance of your kitchen, but installation is not always as simple as attaching the appliance to the wall. Different kitchens have different cabinet configurations, backsplash materials, exhaust locations, electrical connections, and available space.

Whether you are replacing an existing appliance or planning a new kitchen ventilation setup, we can help with the installation and with certain modifications needed to make the new unit fit the existing space.

Range Hood Installation

Before installation, it is important to consider the hood's dimensions, mounting requirements, cooking surface clearance, exhaust configuration, electrical requirements, and the available space around the unit. A range hood that looks like it should fit based on width alone may still require additional modifications because of its depth, height, duct location, or mounting configuration.

Over-the-Range Microwave Installation

Over-the-range microwaves, commonly called OTR microwaves, combine microwave cooking with ventilation and are designed to occupy the space above a range or cooktop.

GALAXSAW provides OTR microwave installation and replacement, including situations where an existing over-the-range microwave is being replaced with a newer model.

Replacing an OTR microwave can involve more than simply removing the old appliance and hanging the new one. The mounting location, cabinet dimensions, electrical connection, ventilation configuration, and backsplash can all affect the installation.

If you are replacing an existing OTR microwave with another OTR microwave, providing the model information for both the old and new units can be very helpful. It allows us to identify potential differences before arriving for the installation.

Custom Range Hood Chimney Modifications

Some range hoods include stainless-steel chimney sections that need to fit a particular ceiling height or installation configuration. When appropriate, GALAXSAW can custom-cut stainless-steel chimney sections to achieve a better fit for the installation.

This can be especially useful when a standard chimney length does not match the existing space. The goal is to achieve a clean, properly positioned installation rather than leaving an unnecessarily long or poorly fitted chimney section.

Because chimney designs and manufacturers vary, the exact modification possible depends on the particular range hood and its construction. Product information and photos are helpful when evaluating this type of project.

Cutting Granite, Stone & Backsplash for Installation

Installing a new range hood or OTR microwave sometimes requires modification of the surrounding surface. Existing granite, stone, or backsplash materials may interfere with the mounting position or dimensions of the new unit.

When appropriate, GALAXSAW can carefully modify these materials to accommodate the installation. This can include cutting or adjusting the area behind or around the appliance so the new unit can sit correctly within the available space.

Not every countertop or backsplash can be modified in the same way. Material type, thickness, location, existing installation, and the amount of material that needs to be removed all matter. If you are planning to install a new hood or OTR microwave in a finished kitchen, sending photos of the area before scheduling is highly recommended.

New Range Hood Exhaust & Venting

Some range hoods are designed to connect to an existing exhaust duct, while others may require a different duct configuration or a new exhaust route.

GALAXSAW can evaluate certain projects involving new or modified range hood exhaust systems, depending on the existing structure, location, accessibility, equipment requirements, and scope of the work.

A new exhaust route can be considerably more involved than replacing a hood that is already connected to an existing duct. Depending on the project, additional mechanical, electrical, structural, permitting, or specialized work may be required. We will evaluate the installation before committing to work that falls outside the appropriate scope.

If your kitchen currently has no exterior exhaust and you want to add one, let us know that when requesting service. A few photos and information about where the range is located can help determine what needs to be evaluated.

Replacing an Existing Range Hood With a Different Style

Changing from one type of ventilation system to another can create additional installation challenges.

For example, replacing an under-cabinet hood with a wall-mounted chimney hood may require changes to the mounting area, backsplash, cabinet arrangement, ductwork, or electrical connection. Likewise, replacing an OTR microwave with a conventional range hood can leave a different-sized opening or require modifications to the surrounding wall and backsplash.

These projects can still be possible, but they should be evaluated based on the actual dimensions and configuration rather than assuming that the new appliance will be a direct replacement.
